I wanted to make a somewhat niche imageboard but my friend dropped out of the developing due to depression and i am more of an idea/design/admin kinda of person than good programmer and it ended up being more work that i can handle, i've been admin/mod for forums back in the day but never really the coding guy so we kinda just shot down the domain.

Has any of you operated something like that? Or has a cool webspace? or want to do one with me

 No.1473

Have you thought of joining wirechan maybe?

 No.1474

>>1473
wirechan is in pretty good shape alreadythey got everything on point for the theme they're going for i think, i just wanted to make a image/textboard in a different theme that is not very popular with imageboard users, it was just an idea that i threw out with my friend and he said he would be down to make it but i wasn't supposed to be i guess.

Do you have a cool webspace fren?

 No.1475

>>1474
Yeah, I have a small landing page for my ZNC and that stuff, plus my friends are working on a revival for an ib they had, plus another one has his own ib and I help them moderate it.

Have you ever dumpster dived and picked up any schway shit? I built my first 2 computers out of parts I found on street.

some! depends on the strength of the door jamb/steel door etc. in a regular house usually a good crowbar (strong legs) will work

 No.798

>>210Lucky! I would love to find some great parts in some dumpsters around here. But I live in a small redneck town where no one ever even got into computers yet now everyone has to have a damn smartphone. The only interesting find I've ever had in a dumpster is a nice bowling ball that I decided to throw off a building and let it roll into oncoming traffic just out of sheer boredom.

I wouldn't recommend taking lockpicking tools, getting caught with them isn't fun.

Saved a Sega Genesis last year that had Vectorman in it. But that's been it since the early 2010s when I saved a 13" CRT that I still have in my room.

It looks like a promising game, but there's already too much drama surrounding it to come out unscathed.

One of the most cyberpunk things I can think of are alternative intranets. The biggest one I know of is in Cuba, called SNET.
Info: https://media.ccc.de/v/34c3-8740-the_internet_in_cuba_a_story_of_community_resilience
There are also examples of this in the DPRK. And, most recently, Russia has been supposedly planning to cut itself off the global Internet (https://www.pcmag.com/news/371347/russia-is-about-to-disconnect-from-the-internet-what-that-m), although I very much doubt they will. I remember reading it wanted to do this in partnership with other BRICS countries, and make another "Internet" to counterbalance the West's influence and power on our current one, but there wasn't much interest from them.

Do you think things might still get worse in the near future?

 No.951

In the meantime, I suggest you guys start running LibreMesh (https://libremesh.org/) with cjdns (https://phillymesh.net/2016/04/21/cjdns-on-openwrt-part-3-installing-configuring-cjdns/), in case worst comes to worst.

Have you ever operated a chan?

What does it take, in terms of memory, CPU, bandwidth and disk space to run a chan? Let's suppose it's at wirechan's posting rate.

What software is best? Vichan? Lynxchan?

there is nothing wrong or extreme about the concept of "free speech"
allowing people to talk shit on your own physical property or website has nothing to do with free speech
forbidding other people to say something in general, by law or other measurements is something a modern free society should look down on
it's the most basic tools to expose and to stop an oppressive and/or evil government/institution

If you don't like what people say, have you ever tried going out of their way? There are a lot of people in the world, you don't need to try to be friends with everyone. And you will surely not make yourself very likeable if you run around trying to take away people's voice.

I think the more popular a platform becomes, the more it has to hold up the values of free speech, especially when your own country benefited from this concept for centuries. That's why people look down on how the owners of Twitter and Facebook are behaving.

"wirechan.org" is a smaller website and I think it's perfectly fine to have a couple of rules, to behave nicely
freedom of speech exists to allow people to express their ideas freely without giving anyone the ability to shut you up, just because his opinion differs from theirs

Only by hearing many _VERY_ different opinions, can a society come to a good and healthy consensus.
If half of the people aren't allowed to give their honest opinion, any consensus formed will be very shaky as if it would only stand on one leg.

A dedicated ip would probably cost more than a vps.

 No.1886

>>1878
You'll want a VPS (most unmanaged linux are barely $10 a month anyways) for stuff like FFmpeg to do webm thumbnailing or use php modules not included in regular shared hosting.
Sure you can use a shared server, but you'll have to make do with some limitations in the software.

 No.1887

>>1885
no one expects anyone selfhosting to have a static ip, isps only give em away with industry/office contracts (or sinfully expensive) and the like, self hosting pretty much always needs dynamic dns like from afraid

 No.1888

Running a small chan with 1 post a week (by me because no one else uses it) that I custom made in nodejs works fine on the cheapest vps I could find which is shared between like 3 other websites as well.

Assuming your chan is gonna be somewhat small you can probably just go with the cheapest $5 a month vps.

Apple announced that they will be using their own chips; I wonder how that will effect x86's monopoly on desktop computing.

 No.1525

>>1524
It probably won't. Macs already had compatibility issues with things made for PCs (e.g. Linux), so I doubt widening that gap further will change much. Then again, I tend to be continuously surprised at what kind of cues tech companies take from Apple. Like, it didn't surprise me at all when iPhone abandoned headphone jacks, but I was absolutely baffled when other phone companies followed suit.
If anything breaks the x86 monopoly, I really hope it's something open source like RISC-V and not just companies trying to copy Apple's dumb bullshit. Who am I kidding though, that's not gonna be the case.

yeah, a big part of the issue is consumer grade computers and professional computers are kind of blurring together; you have spotty 13 year old boys in their bedrooms using rigs that would be powerful enough to be a professional workstation. if consumer computers get capped at a certain level, then hopefully consumer software stays less resource heavy. plus it'd encourage pro software (daws, 3d modelling software, etc) to optimize better to get to da consoomers

There was a strange asian news show playing at a noodle shop I ate in earlier today. Half the screen was taken up by subtitles in fifteen different languages, and the anchors had the kind of engineered persona you'd expect to see in a religious recrutment video or a piece of wartime propaganda. I assumed it was created by some enviromentalist organization since the news stories seemed to revolve around animal rights (it was a vegan place and the owners where chinese so it would make sense that they would want to play that).
They where talking about disaster relief after an earthquake in japan when they said "The victims of the disaster where grateful to the supreme master for sending her blessing". I then noticed that the channel was called Supreme Master TV. Later on they had a montage of people from different countries singing about how the supreme master cured all their problems. All those subtitles? They where the languages of every country that has followers of the supreme master. I did some research on the supreme master later. She is a vietnamese spiritual teacher named Ching Hai. Turns out she founded the restaurant chain. I looked at the logo for the restaurant, it contains the supreme masters symbol. They where good noodles, would go there again.

 No.877

Weird. As a Vietnamese, I haven't heard of her.

I presume that you were eating in a place called "Loving Hut"? It's a vegan noodle shop chain run by Chinghai Sydney, (the supreme leader that you mentioned).
Found a list of their US restaurant locations.

I've got some family in Houston TX, so maybe I'll stop in and try it out next time I'm there.

What got you into Linux?

Windows 8. Bought a new laptop with win8, then was made unemployed. Lived in a micro apartment with only cold water and next door to a factory. Depression set in.

Decided F* it, win8 is a horror show. Had played with Linux before (dual booted Fedora at university / well meaning parents bought me the RedHatBible when I was in high school) and just went full Linux this time.

Haven't gone back since. Main issue these days is finding a place selling laptops (often refurbished) without a win license tacked onto the price. Still poor. But at least my pc does my bidding.

 No.1597

I don't remember exactly why I got into linux.
I think I decided to set up a dual boot setup on my old laptop after reading about it on LifeHacker (I think). I didn't like it at first, but I did kind of like it. Now I can't imagine ever using Windows ever agoin.

*AAAaargh why doesn't it work on the lcd display channel with this board lol
3 posts and 1 image reply omitted. Click reply to view.

 No.1838

Well, it worked for a bit on the breadboard, loose connections(?) permitting

Still no luck with the harness / display out, though it's reading the touch input over spi just fine

 No.1839

Started making a second harness using solid-core jumper-wires, display tested okay on usb power prior to wiring in the touch interface, but now again doesn't want to work

Also with both harnesses display and touch works when the micro is powered directly from a couple of AA batteries, as an anon mentioned elsewhere

 No.1840

More tests, 2xAA through a little voltage step-up chip for 5 volts, 32u4 / harness 2
Display is working

Tried to repeat display working without touch connected using jumpers, usb connected / fail?

It really doesn't want to work on the 32u4/pro micro with usb connection for some reason

 No.1841

use a scope
