I've been trying to get the source files (images) out of the goofy application with the dress-up game and shooting gallery that came with the "BOOTLEG" album. I'm not very technically experienced, so I gave up years ago, but maybe someone here has some ideas?

I think Ghidra might have given some incomplete results, I never got far with it. You can extract a lot from "lain_win.exe" with 7zip but I'm not sure what most of it is, some are sound effects which are playable when given an extension, but the rest are a mystery to me, I assume the small ones are scripts and the "big" ones are images, but compressed somehow. I didn't find anything familiar when I opened them with a hex editor.
I believe "lain_mov.dat" turned out to be an ordinary .avi, it's playable in WMP (it's just a compressed version of the anime OP that plays when you "beat" the dress-up game before it resets).

If anyone's got the know-how and interest to take a look at the files, please see https://anonfiles.com/bdVdu9J0u0/bootleg_zip (46+ MB) and reply to the thread with your opinion. And if you figure anything out, you'll be a little bit of a hero for isolating the classic "dancing lain" that sometimes appears in the site banner, kek.
(RUN AT YOUR OWN RISK - works fine and safe for me but if you don't trust me you can likely find this in six10's pack at >>1106).

we've just recently started reverse engineering this game. the assets are embedded into the lain_win.exe binary, LZSS compressed. they get decompressed at runtime. we were able to reveng the decompression algorithm, located here - https://github.com/The-Knights-of-the-Eastern-Calculus/lainextract/tree/main/lain_bootleg, the final goal is to make a cross-platform implementation of the game, very primitive work done so far - https://github.com/ad044/lain-bootleg-bootleg.

Woah, that's a cool coincidence. I tried to click the Discord link you sent but I get "Something's Going on Here" error. I noticed that there are some files on the GitHub related to the PlayStation game, does your team know about jPSXdec? It's a general asset extractor for PlayStation disc images but I believe was initially made to decompile the Lain game in particular, associated with a translation effort that never seemed to go anywhere since 2013. It's what I've used a few years ago and it's pretty good.

strange, try this? https://discord.gg/JGnEyhD6ah
as for the psx game - we've already reverse engineered and remade the entire game in the browser, jpsxdec and its creator (m35) helped a LOT, you can try it out here - 3d.laingame.net

Turns out I had to use Tor, but I had trouble navigating it anyway. Discord must think that I'm a bot due to my Firefox settings.

Oh man, you're THAT team. Really impressive work!

No way, you guys took apart the voice and SFX files too? Totally killer work, seeing so much talent and collaboration on such an old and not-very-good game makes me feel left out! People still love Lain so much after all this time. I wonder why LAIN21.XA[15] through [31] are all identical? It's the voice clip that plays before the Lain-avatar says the player's name, "We'll always be together, [Player]." All of them are the same, so it's not like there are seventeen slightly different ones depending on the name's initial sound.
Technical things aside, I've been looking at the official guide for the game, particularly the Q&A section. I never got far in learning how to read Japanese, but what I gather from it and the partial translation on lain.wiki does make me fear the kind of story secrets that may die with the developers.

I found an issue. I tried to join your server, but I was kicked and banned in less than a minute, though I hadn't made any interactions yet, and I didn't have an offensive username or avatar. I don't use Twitter or GitHub, so may I send you an email?

Maybe my IP or account has been shadowflagged. Somebody already beat me to it on your GitHub, anyway.

Where are the node "buttons," like the one with Lain's little signature on laingame.net? And the font sheets and stuff. The source code on your github only has the Lain sprites, the credits, and the little vignettes for the audio.
