Man, the airwaves are silent now a days
if you really want to talk, get a ham license and radio

I have something to admit
I do the same thing

I can't get this thing to transmit a distance even close to what I'd like, I live right next to a repeater and I come in as static.

this is a really nice radio. if you're receiving fine but you can't transmit to your local repeater, check to see whether your antenna is properly matched, if the final amp in the radio is still alive (in case you transmitted and the power came back to fry it), and if you're using a directional antenna, make sure you have it pointed the way it's polarization requires.

the airwaves aren't dead at all, it's just harder for a lot of people to hang up a wire and send morse code to someone in Antarctica because of sort of poor sunspot conditions and increased RFI in cities making wideband antennas next to useless for urban amateurs. with all that said, though, you can still do a lot and it's a ton of fun.

this is anon, clear *beep* *kschht*

Oh, yeah there are plenty on the waves, usually they all get on around 7 to 8 ish in my area.

Now that you said that, I'm using a mag mount antenta mounted on a large metal plate. I don't quite remember if I did or not, but I wouldn't be surprised if I keyed it while the anntenta wasn't hooked up. I got my license a few years ago, but never really understood anntentas, guess I'll have to research it a bit more and order some finals.

A better term for my skill set would be an Amateur Amateur Radio operator.

yeah, I feel you. the old dudes around here are always on in the early mornings- not that I'm upset about it. they usually have good things to say about life and technology. young people are out there, but you usually have to find where they hang out in your area. wireless experimentation in general is something that I feel is grossly underrepresented in the making/hacking sphere, it'd be nice if amateur licensing could grow a little.

your mag mount is probably fine. those are good. it might not be a 2m/70cm antenna, maybe just one or the other?

because your kenwood is an all-mode radio, you can do crazy shit like meteor scatter and ft8 on 2 meters. also, packet in general is really interesting and fun. I kind of want to start up a microwave mesh net in my city, but it's a lot to handle. maybe a PBBS would work instead.

sorry for the cringe image related but it made me laugh

"I'm going to hide this tape when I'm finished. If none of us make it, at least there will be some kind of record. The storm's been hitting us hard now for 48 hours. We still have nothing to go on…One other thing: I think it rips through your clothes when it takes you over. Windows found some shredded and bloody long-johns in the trash but the name tag was missing. They could be anybody's. Nobody…nobody trusts anybody now, and we're all very tired… there's nothing more I can do, just wait…this is R.J. Anon, helicopter pilot, US outpost #76." *kchht*

Sorry for the late reply. Yeah, I'll look into it all,
maybe I do have the wrong antenna, like I said
I'm not very good, and I totallyrelate with your
first paragraph, and hope to get out soon to meet
up with a club. (pandemic permitting).
